Some butterfly species migrate, covering astonishing distances. In Central Europe, for example, the red admiral and the painted lady cross the Alps. In America, the monarch butterfly travels over 4,400 kilometres on its way from the north to Mexico. The butterflies form huge swarms, sometimes gathering in numbers of over a billion individuals. It is an overwhelming sight, of which our small swarm is just a tiny reflection.
